Search Efforts Paused at Miami Condo

Officials cited structural concerns at collapsed building.

In the early morning hours Thursday, rescue efforts at Champlain Towers South in Surfside, Florida, were halted. Authorities expressed worry about “standing structures” in the 30-foot-high pile of rubble.

As of Wednesday, officials retrieved six more bodies from the partly collapsed 12-story condominium building, two of whom were children aged 10 and 4. The recoveries brought the total deceased to 18 as 145 still remain unaccounted for one week after a portion of the structure fell.

The president and first lady met with Florida government officials, first responders, and families of the victims on Thursday.

UPDATE: Search crews resumed rescue efforts Thursday evening.
